On the occasion of World Environment Day, June 5, The Vietnam Record Book Organisation, Vietking, in conjunction with the environmental website www.tinmoitruong.vn announced their selection of the seven greatest contributors to improved environmental awareness and activity.
1. Biggest Endangered Primate Rescue Centre
The Endangered Primate Rescue Centre based at Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh Province, is the first of its kind in Indochina. It is also home to the highest numbers of primates in South East Asia.
The Centre currently houses about 150 primates from 15 species. Most of them are listed in the Vietnam and World Red Book of Endangered Species and seven are considered are endangered or critically at risk of extinction.

2. Biggest natural lake on limestone mountain
Ba Be Lake in Bac Kan Province which was formed 200 million years ago was honoured. The biggest natural lake in Vietnam appeared at the end of Cambri era when the earth’s crust shifted. The area consists of approximately 500 million cubic metres, with the deepest part of the lake dropping to 35 metres depth. The water in Ba Be Lake is filled by water from the Pe Lam, Pe Lu and Pe Leng rivers. In 2011, UNESCO recognised Ba Be Lake as Vietnam’s third Ramsar site.

3. Biggest marine samples collection
The Institute of Oceanography or the Oceanographic Museum in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province currently possesses one of the world’s largest collection of marine samples. 20,000 samples featuring 5,000 species are on display at the museum. The 5,000 square metre Museum includes the sample storage area that takes over 1,000 square metres, with 2,000 square metres devoted to raising marine species.

4. First factory recycle nylon to oil industry in Vietnam
The factory was built at Khanh Son dumping ground in Danang by the Vietnam Environment JSC. The factory also recycles waste that is difficult to decompose such as rubber into industrial fuel.

5. Biggest solar power system in Vietnam
Vietnam Intel Products in HCMC put into operation the biggest solar power system in Vietnam on April 23, 2012. The plant can provide 321,000 KwH and reduce 221,300 kg in carbon emissions annually.

6. Biggest artificial lake
That is the Thac Ba Lake in Yen Bai Province. The 240 kilometres wide lake is a reservoir of Thac Ba Hydro Power Plant. It has about 2.9 billion cubic metres and 1,300 islets.
In 1996, Thac Ba Lake was recognised as a national heritage site.

7. Biggest wind power plant
Built in 2008 and completed in 2011 by Vietnam Renewable Energy JSC, the wind power plant in Binh Thuan Province is the biggest wind power plant in South East Asia. The VND 2 trillion (USD96 million) plant can provide 90 million KwH and reduce carbon emissions by 50,000 tonnes per year.
