President changed course to outrun them, but the damage she suffered the night before had significantly reduced her speed.[91] Attempting to gain speed, Decatur ordered expendable cargo thrown overboard; by late afternoon of 15 January, HMS Endymion came alongside and proceeded to fire broadsides.[92][93] Decatur planned to bring President in close to Endymion, whereby President's crew could board and capture the opposing ship and sail her to New York.
